Lt. Col. Shawn Harris, a member of the Iota Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., recently received a prestigious award from the Greater Grand Rapids, Mich., community.  Harris, a native of Blakely, Georgia, is the son of Norma T. Harris-Great and the late Charles Harris. He is a graduate of Early County High School, Tuskegee University with a BS in Education, Grand Valley State University with a MS in Education Leadership, and the United States Army War College with a MS in Strategic Studies.

Michigan Army National Guard Lt. Col. Shawn Harris received the Walter Coe Public Service Award at the 31st Grand Rapids Community College Giants Award Banquet held at the DeVos Place, Steelcase Ballroom in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Jan. 26, 2013.  Harris' family, son Joshua, wife Dr. Karla Harris, son Ahmon and Warrant Officers CW3 Debra Salters and CW4 Joseph Brunsma attended the event to witness Harris receiving the award.
Harris gave an acceptance speech crediting God, family, community and the military as the positive influences enabling him to receive the award. Harris also spoke about the challenges facing returning veterans, chief among them being employment. Harris said, “If you really want to assist our returning veterans with the biggest challenge they face, the best thing you can do is to give them a job. With the maturity and life experiences they have gained through military service, you won’t be disappointed by their work performance.”

The Giants Award Banquet was established in 1983 and honors 13 African-American individuals or organizations for their exceptional contributions shaping the history and quality of life of greater Grand Rapids.
